Termites Services

There are about 20 species of subterranean termites which commonly attack timber- in- service throughout Australia and 10 of these can be found in QLD. So prevention, to keep termites out, to protect buildings especially our homes, is a major concern for most Australian home owner especially if you are the owner of a residence which was previously constructed before the year 2000.
Common species
Subterranean termites species which make tunnels in the ground. They are capable of travelling up to 50-100 meters underground in search of a food source.
Some of the common types of termites located in Qld:

Heterotermes
Coptotermes
Schedorhinotermes
Microcerotermes
Nasutitermes

Mastotermes

mastotermesMastotermes darwiniensis, common names Giant Northern Termite and Darwin Termite, is a termite species found only in northern Australia. It is a very peculiar animal, the most primitive termite alive.[1] As such, it shows uncanny similarities to certain cockroaches, the termites' closest relatives. These similarities include the anal lobe of the wing and the laying of eggs in bunches, rather than singly. It is the only living member of its genus Mastotermes and its family Mastotermitidae, though numerous fossil taxa are known. The termites were traditionally placed in the Exopterygota, but such an indiscriminate treatment makes that group a paraphyletic grade of basal neopterans. Thus, the cockroaches, termites and their relatives are nowadays placed in a clade called Dictyoptera.

HETEROTERMES SPP

HETEROTERMESHeterotermes ferox is often encountered attacking posts, poles, paling fences, timber decking and flooring of properties wherever weathering and decay are present. Heterotermes ferox is widely distributed throughout Australia, but fortunately does not range far from its small colonies which include a queen, king, soldiers, workers, and reproductives. Soldiers are 3.5 to 7.5mm and have long rectangular heads with no obvious teeth on their prominent and dark mandibles. Both workers and soldiers have slender bodies, move slowly and the soldiers in particular, are not courageous with their peculiar habit of shuffling backwards when confronted.

Coptotermes

coptotermesThe body of the worker termite is small, white and translucent as are the limbs. The soldier is larger and also white but the ovoid head, the forward pointing mandibles, the prothorax and the front segments of the abdomen are dark brown. There are two small pale spots on the head adjacent to the antennae. On the forehead there is an opening called a fontanelle which can extrude a white defensive secretion. In appearance, C. gestroi is very similar to C. formosanus but they can be differentiated under the microscope, with the number of hairs on the head of the soldier differing in the two species

Microcerotermes

MicrocerotermesAmitermitinae constitute a subfamily of harvester termites & allies (family Termitidae) in the Isoptera order. They have been merged with the Termitinae subfamily. and are considered by ITIS as an invalid taxon. However, a case could be made to keep them in their own subfamily because they have some important attributes that affect soil.

Impact of termites

impact of the termites In a lot of ways, termites are a paradox. They're strong enough to eat a house, but their bodies are soft, delicate and prone to drying out. Soldiers, whose sole job is to defend the colony, can't even feed themselves. Adult termites develop wings so they can leave the colony and find a new home, helping the termite population grow. But winged termites are terrible flyers, and most don't survive the journey.
